Blueing the Caspian Sea Contributes to Caspian Sea Action Week 2026 in Kazakhstan

The Blueing the Caspian Sea Project joined scientists, government representatives and environmental experts in Aktau, Kazakhstan, as part of International Caspian Sea Action Week 2026, contributing to discussions on stronger environmental monitoring and scientific cooperation for the Caspian Sea.

Held from 6 to 12 August, Caspian Sea Action Week brought together participants from across the region through a programme combining scientific dialogue, environmental initiatives, volunteer activities and innovation. The week provided a platform to exchange knowledge and explore approaches to some of the most pressing environmental challenges affecting the Caspian ecosystem.

The Blueing the Caspian Sea Project contributed to two key events at the start of the week. On 6 August, the project participated in an International Training Seminar focused on modern technologies and approaches for marine environmental monitoring. Discussions explored monitoring and early-warning systems, data quality and the use of new technologies to strengthen understanding of environmental conditions and risks.

On 7 August, the project was presented at the International Round Table “Collaborative Scientific Research as the Key to Addressing the Pressing Challenges of the Caspian Sea.” Scientists and experts discussed environmental monitoring, changing sea levels, pressures on marine and coastal ecosystems, biodiversity conservation and opportunities for stronger scientific cooperation and knowledge exchange. Scientific monitoring and research were central themes of the first two days of Caspian Sea Action Week.

The discussions provided an important opportunity to highlight how Blueing the Caspian Sea is supporting Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan to strengthen pollution monitoring and biodiversity planning. By improving national monitoring capacities and supporting more systematic and comparable environmental data, the project is helping build a stronger evidence base for understanding and responding to pressures on the Caspian ecosystem.

Participation in Caspian Sea Action Week also connected the project’s activities with wider scientific and environmental efforts underway across the region, creating opportunities for knowledge exchange and continued collaboration as implementation progresses.

Through stronger monitoring, better environmental knowledge and biodiversity planning, Blueing the Caspian Sea is supporting more informed action to protect the Caspian Sea and its unique ecosystems.
